BOY SCOUTING is “A GAME WITH A PURPOSE”

Chief Scout and founder of the worldwide Boy Scout movement, Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell of Gilwell, England together with William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt described Scouting as “a game with a purpose”.  Here, then, is Scouting in a nutshell: A game for boys under the leadership of boys with the wise guidance and counsel of a grown-up who still has the enthusiasm of youth in him. A purposeful game, but a game just the same, a game that develops character by practice that trains for citizenship–through experience in the out-of-doors.

Crofton Troop 115 strives to do just that! We have a long history of excellence and service to the community of more than 40 years.  Crofton area young men continue to enjoy the benefits of Scouting today as they have in the past.   As of March 2020, 96 members of Troop 115 have earned the Eagle Rank.

Community United Methodist Church (CUMC) of Crofton, Maryland sponsors Boy Scout Troop 115.  We belong to the Baltimore Area Council, The Capital District; and we are in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. CUMC has faithfully sponsored our Troop since 1993.

Archived records show that Troop 115 of Crofton, Maryland was in existence as early as 1973 and was sponsored by First Baptist Church. The Troop was formed to accommodate the explosion of Scouts in Crofton in the early 1970’s. At that time there was only one Troop in Crofton, Troop 758. Troop 758, under the leadership of Scoutmaster Charles E. Brown and Assistant Scoutmaster John Strothman, had expanded to over 100 Scouts. Troop 758’s leadership decided to send their Webelos over to form Troop 115, however, it wasn’t until Charles E. Brown assumed the role of Scoutmaster in 1975 that the Troop had a trained leader. It was also during this time that another Assistant Scoutmaster from Troop 758 left to form Troop 731, which was sponsored by Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church.

Troop 115 strives to be a service-oriented troop, with strong participation in the Order of the Arrow. Our first Eagle Scout on record was John M. Farrell who earned his Eagle in 1979 and went on to graduate from the Naval Academy and then pursued a career in the Navy. John’s younger brother, Robbie, also earned his Eagle not long after and received a full scholarship at Carnegie-Mellon in physics. In 1985, now delegate Michael Malone earned his Eagle Rank as a member of Troop 115. Additionally, 21 dedicated adults have held the title of Scoutmaster for Troop 115 as a full-time Scouting leadership position.
